The ABB AI523 Analog Input Module is a 16-channel industrial input module designed for compatible ABB AC500 and S500 programmable logic controller systems. The ABB TU516 is an S500 I/O terminal unit designed for compatible analog modules and 24VDC digital modules. It uses spring terminals for field wiring and acts as the mounting base for the AI523 electronic module.
The ABB AI523 Analog Input Module plugs into the TU516 terminal unit. This modular construction separates the electronic module from the field wiring, helping technicians replace the electronic section without removing every field conductor from the terminal base.
The AI523 may also be installed on a compatible TU515 terminal unit, which uses screw terminals. Therefore, the terminal-unit model must be checked carefully when the customer specifically requires the TU516 spring-terminal version.
Process Supply and Electrical Isolation
The module uses a rated 24VDC process supply connected through the designated UP and ZP terminals. The official supply tolerance, polarity and grounding requirements must be followed during installation.
Galvanic isolation is provided between the input section and the PLC I/O bus at module level. The individual input channels are not isolated from one another. Designers and technicians must therefore consider common reference potentials, sensor grounding and possible voltage differences between connected field devices.
Analog signal cables should be shielded and installed separately from high-power wiring whenever possible. The potential difference between the analog ground and process-supply reference must remain within the limits stated in the ABB installation documentation.
Status and Diagnostic Indicators
The ABB AI523 Analog Input Module includes one yellow LED for each of its 16 input channels. The brightness of the channel LED represents the condition or level of the corresponding analog input signal.
A green LED indicates the availability of the 24VDC process supply. Red diagnostic indicators provide information about channel-group or module errors. These LEDs assist with commissioning and troubleshooting but should be evaluated together with the PLC diagnostics, wiring diagram and Automation Builder project.
Application in SCR PLC Units
The AI523 may be installed in a compatible PLC unit associated with an SCR control system. In this type of application, the module can receive analog signals from transmitters, current or voltage monitoring circuits, temperature sensors and other field instruments.

Compatibility Checks Before Ordering
